Veteran Coaches Bring Decades of Experience and Dedication
Sheffield Ice Hockey Academy (SIHA) is thrilled to announce the appointment of a new coaching leadership team, bringing together a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to the development of young hockey talent. The new team comprises Martin White, Stevie Weeks, and Mark Illingworth, each bringing a unique and impressive background to the academy. The three coaches will undertake responsibilities for the Junior and Senior section whilst working alongside the current committee to develop coaching ethos, player development and longer-term vision for the Academy.
Martin White Coaching Experience and Background
Martin White, an accomplished coach with 29 years of experience, has worked with teams across all age levels, from senior squads to under-10s, at club, regional, and national levels. His coaching journey includes stints with Sheffield NIHL 1 & 2, Sheffield Juniors, Nottingham Juniors, Whitley Bay Juniors, the Midlands Conference, and England. Additionally, Martin is part of the EIH Coach Education Programme, helping to shape the future of coaching in the sport.
Steve Weeks Coaching Experience and Background
Stevie Weeks, a stalwart of Sheffield Ice Hockey Academy, has played at all levels within the academy, bringing 30 years of playing experience to his coaching role. Stevie has competed for Sheffield Seniors across various leagues including NIHL2, NIHL1, NIHL, and the Elite League equivalents as well as representing the Midlands regional team, Junior England National team’s and GB U18s. His coaching experience is equally extensive, having mentored all age groups at SIHA, from the under-10s to the senior NIHL1 and NIHL2 teams, guiding them to numerous titles. Stevie has further honed his skills, leading teams at the conference level from under-11 to under-19, and earning multiple championships. As the Director of Player Development for the Sheffield Steeldogs, he will bolster the relationship with both the Steeldogs and Steelers, paving the way for the pathway to Senior hockey.
Mark Illingworth Coaching Experience and Background
Mark Illingworth, who played alongside Stevie and Martin during their junior days at the Sheffield academy, joins the team with a rich history of coaching success. After playing in the Sheffield Academy and later for the GB university team, Mark transitioned to coaching in Sheffield. He has coached various age groups, winning nationals with the under-11s, and has contributed to the Midlands Conference and England teams. Mark is also the visionary behind the Academy’s Skills programme and Young Leaders initiative, both of which will see further investment and expansion under the new leadership.
